The reason people can easily identify Ichigo as a Soul Reaper is partially because of the sword, yes, but more importantly because he is wearing a Shihakushō or "Death-Conquering Robe" in English. It's the black robe he wears. It is the uniform of all Soul Reapers and is more than just ordinary clothing, it represents the existence of their Soul Reaper powers. If you recall when Rukia transferred her powers to Ichigo in episode 1, her Shihakushō turned from black to white to signify that her powers had been lost. At the same time, when Ichigo inherited her powers a black Shihakushō suddenly materialized around his body to signify that he had become a Soul Reaper.

Bleach is such a comedy and a serious show too. Such a piece of art really!
