Some of the things you mentioned about magic will be answered there.. The song of Ice and Fire in GOT is based on the prophecy which was fulfilled when the Night King was killed.Jon is Ice and Fire because of his Stark/Targaryen blood.
The books ended with Jon’s death. So the magic of bringing him back etc…that was the HBO writers adding in more magic than what was written. The history you already know starts with Aegon the conqueror coming to Westeros with his 3 dragons. So that is why the dragons with Danerys and her being fire proof is important. It’s not just an episode 10 season 1 thriller without that she would have never joined Jon to help defeat the Night King thus the prophecy wouldn’t have been fulfilled.
HOTD brings the same type of edge of your seat excitement and roller coaster events plus characters you get very invested in. It’s nice to still be in Westeros with familiar castles, Family houses, sigils and locations. The familiarity of the environment was great to see for all those that were missing GOT.
A few fun facts. The scene of Tormund and Jon leaving the wall is an exact mirror of the first scene of the show. Kit who plays Jon said in an interview after the show that protecting his sisters was the biggest motivator to killing Danerys. The writers said that Drogon took Danerys to Volantis. That is where the red priests are so maybe Jon’s spin off will relate to that. There are 8 spin offs in the works and 4 seasons of HOTD. The books are already written so this will be pure George RR Martin guiding the shows unlike the end of GOT. The last scene of this episode all of the crew got to bring their kids and families to be the free folk leaving the wall. That’s why it lingered there so long at the end so they could all be on the show.
