For those who didn't understand the last part of the end credit sense where you see the boy and the dog walking into the tree, it represent the cycle of the Titans coming again. Pretty much the whole story is one huge cycle of non-stop violence happening all over again. Ymir had the same exact tree when she fell inside and gain her powers of the Founding Titan which means the next person who stumbles inside the tree will gain the powers of the next Founding Titan. Which explains the boy and dog in that sense. Pretty much when Eren got rid of the remaining people who had the Titan ability after getting behead, the cycle is just going to start all over again in a new Era!
eren didn't die for nothing, no offense but if you pay attention and look back to the last episode for season 4 part 1, eren stated that he wished for mikasa and his friends to all live long lives. His end goal was freedom for his friends not generational freedom for the island, mikasa being shown dying from old age was proof that eren got his wish. Also the progression of the island quite shows that everybody from the current time is long dead, all that increase in technology definitely takes decades if not a century.
The reason I like the way the portrayed Eren is bc it let's you see Armin and everyone's perspective. Which means you also get the same emotions (more or less) that eren and mikasa had when Eren died. You're opinion is valid though. I get what u r saying considering that season 4 was such a mood shift.

For instance: eren was never allowed to express emotions to mikasa, because his goal was to show ymir a way out of her lovemisery to erase titan powers. (one of erens and mikasas last conversations is about him, wanting her to show him a different way, when she says , he is family to her).
his other goal was to make sure his friends can live a peaceful long live. and the last fact is, that this was the only way to achieve that. the reason is his existence of a village idiot , who is a slave of freedom.
