Asta didn’t take the wizards kings hand because it would mean admitting that he wasn’t able to handle this
What we know so far is that Asta’s swords are anti magic and suck away/reflect the magic of whatever they come in contact with. After the wizard king tried to hold Asta’s sword he said Asta was probably the only one who could use it. Because Asta has no magic he can wield the swords without getting fatigued from having his magic drained
As for the Wizard King not being there, he had already left before the attack started. Depending on how far away that area was staying and waiting for them to show up may have been the best option. What if he left to head back, but they were already gone by the time he got back. Staying there and waiting guarantees that he’ll catch anyone trying to escape. There were also 3 magic knight captains in the capital so it’s reasonable for him to assume they could handle it. Even Fuegoleon let himself get teleported because he wasn’t worried

The Wizard King was too powerful, these foes were supposed to be dangerous, I was a bit disappointed with this episode. Furthermore he is the Wizard King the enemy should be very familiar with his magic and be prepared to face him in battle. Suzy you are right there is something odd about the Wizard King's actions over the last several episodes.
The Wizard King is the strongest mage in the kingdom, these guys literally had to send the magic knights away because they weren’t capable of taking them all on, so they were only dangerous so long as they had the magic knights out numbered. The wizard king also goes around in disguise and hasn’t publicly shown his powers at all so there’s nothing to suggest that they should be aware of his powers, let alone strong enough to defeat him
