I did a little research and due to the climate watermelons are apparently rare in the UK, it's a pretty small industry there. It seems watermelons need a warmer climate to grow in bulk. That explains why she is not as familiar with them, who knows if she can even buy them at her grocery store?
I'm from the US, and here watermelons are in every grocery store I have ever been to haha. It would certainly be very bizarre to meet someone here who hadn't tasted a watermelon, much less didn't know what they looked like. Warmer states like Florida, Georgia, California, and Texas are the perfect climate and produce tons of them.

Yeah the anime added an original scene that showed Rukia having more natural talent as a kid than Renji which didn’t exist in the manga. As a result Rukia being in the normal class while Renji is in the advanced comes across as weird, but Renji was actually just the stronger of the two and got a higher score as a result

What Momo did was close to that. She didn't knock him out with the sheer force of her spiritual pressure, that's something you are more likely to see from a Captain. She used a Kido spell that is specifically designed to knock someone unconscious. The effectiveness of Kido spells are proportional to a Soul Reaper's spiritual pressure output though, so you were technically still correct. Regardless, what she did was very impressive by Soul Reaper standards.
