You probably didn't pay much attention to those details in Naruto's many flash backs, lol. But yes in the episodes where they showed Zabuza's backstory in OG Naruto and Kisame (Shark guy)'s back story in Shipudden it was referred to as the "Blood mist village." Mostly because the graduation ceremony for their ninja school back then was basically all the students fight to the death the winner becomes a shinobi.
Suzy, the Mist village isn't what you're thinking. We've never really seen the village that much except for like 1 scene when the Mizukage was heading to the 5 Kage summit. It wasn't even until Shippuden before we saw another of the 5 great nations (Gaara's village). You're thinking of the Zabuza arc in the land of waves. That place is much closer to the leaf village.
