What do you mean "we don't know if he's dead or not"? It was made pretty clear, he had his sad-scene old-team sparkling fantasy scene, he even met his dad in the afterlife. No, he dead and gone, honey. Don't take away my satisfaction of seeing you cry now by undermining it with doubt! XD I mean, that's not fair.
Imo Kakashi didn't get "squashed". Jiraiya didn't have to fight the strongest Pain until the end, and I don't think even he could've gotten through Pain's almighty pushes. Kakashi had pretty bad luck. (I do acknowledge that Jiraiya was stronger than Kakashi.)
Depend on the perspective, I suppose. If this was a natural occurance, animal hunting prey without eating them means they're hunting for sport and not for food. In that scenario, I'd say that much worse because those animals know cruelty, and they're literally living for it.
