He did renounce his claim and titles to join the Night's Watch, but his death by stabbing, took the renouncing away. He served for them. He died for them and by them. That's why he said in Season 5, after the Red Woman resurrected him, "And, now my Watch has ended"...And, then he walked away, leaving Castle Black. My Last name is Black, because that's my Husband's last name, so I bought him a Castle Black hoodie. I have a Stark banner tattoo on my calf that says "The Pack Survives". I am still sending you something for a late Wedding gift/ Christmas Gift. John Snow is the last male Targaryan heir, when the Night's Watch stabbed and killed him, that sealed the deal of him having to be in the Night's Watch any longer. When the Red Woman brought him back to life, John Snow could do whatever he wanted to. His Watch had ended, because he served his whole life fighting for them. If his own Brothers of the Night's Watch hadn't stabbed him to death, he would never have had a claim to the throne, but because he was half Targaryan, half Stark, and had served his time in the Night's Watch, he was 100% the most reasonable person to sit on the Iron Throne. And, the fact that he didn't even want the Throne, made him even more suitable to be the one to sit on it...It would have been cool if Arya and Gendry ended up together, because Arya and Gendry's Dad's were besties.
