In the previous arc, Naruto and Sasuke both suffered a loss that left them in tears. Naruto lost his beloved master/grandfather figure and Sasuke lost his beloved older brother.

The part that REALLY got me wasn't when Jiraiya died (well, I was still sad about it), it was when Naruto found out about it.
